I took Bayley to the vets this evening for
a dental check up. The reason being, not because he is having any trouble with his teeth, but because he is getting old.
He is now coming up for 12 years old and I thought I would have his teeth checked again for him to have another scale and polish while he is still young enough not to be in the danger zone of going under anesthetic. I didn't want to wait until he gets older, starts being in pain, and then have to go under anesthetic as a very old man.
On the vet checking he found no bad teeth, but what he did find is that his gums in the front have so badly receded now that he is losing his front six top teeth. He is once again in bad need of a scale and polish anyway. His last was 2 years ago. If he doesn't have those front teeth out now it wont be long before they really give him big problems.
Yorkies are re-known for having dental problems and that is why I have been so careful over the years to make sure his teeth are looked after. What I couldn't foresee as he got older was having receding gums.
Bugger!!!!
He is going in for the op on Friday.

I honestly can't remember how much his last scale and polish was, but I do know that the vet I use now I have moved down here is a lot cheaper and a great vet.
The surgery I used to take Bayley to was more of a large clinic so one never knew which vet one would see, but with this chap now, he works alone.
One visit to this new vet with Bayley's back problem and he fixed it by manipulation in 2 minutes and hasn't had a problem since. At the last vets I had paid for x-rays, visits everytime Bayleys back went and still they hadn't cured it.
For the whole thing for Bayley's dental treatment this time, it's going to cost approx £160 not counting any drugs I bring home with us. I think that's approx $264, which is a very reasonable price.

I really am not looking forward to this as he is going to be very uncomfortable for a few days while his gums heal.
Ok, it may sound as if I am fussing for nothing but without being mushy, he is like a babe to me.

At least with my hens that is something I won't be worrying about!

He is now home and in much better condition than I thought he would be.
He ended up only having to have the 4 front teeth out and not 6. With scaling and polishing the vet managed to keep the others.
He is a bit quiet but apart from that his mouth doesn't seem to be worrying him. Thank God.
And thank God it's all over with now. This has been a very long day for me waiting for him to be ready to be collected.

Regarding eating, the vet said he will have no problem as the top front teeth aren't used to eat with and he will be able to eat his normal Bakers dried food.
But, I am giving him soft food for a few days to make sure that he doesn't accidently catch his sore gums with a hard biscuit type food and slow down the healing.
He is also on a 10 day course of pills which are meant to help speed up healing. I think he is still getting used to having a gap in the front though, lol. Love his heart.
After his scale and polish, his teeth are once again shinny white.
