  1. A Couple of Broken Ribs

    05/06/09 01:47:45 | 31 Comments

I am typing this on wordpad at approximately 6.30pm Tuesday evening. As I type this I have no idea when I will be able to post it as I am sitting in my Daughters new house where her web access has not been connected yet and wont be until Thursday.

The reason I am sitting here at Sarah's and not in my own home as I was up until 9pm last night, is because from 9pm until midnight last night I was up at the Accident and Emergency department of our local hospital. I left there doped up to the eyeballs on morphine and with the knowledge that I had a couple of cracked ribs. I am therefore spending this first few days with Sarah and Mark and when they return to work on Thursday I will staying with Beverley for a few days more.

I would never have believed in a million years that someone could crack their ribs under the circumstances that I did mine.

I literally leaned over the arm of my settee to pick something up that had been knocked off. As I leaned over and...
  2. Sorry to be Missing

    01/11/09 04:02:18 | 16 Comments

This is for all those that care about me and have been wondering where the heck I am and how I am.

Most of you already know that I haven't been well for quite a few days having not only been struck down with a really bad virus but that I have been also been suffering with a really bad hip and once again had to get me sodding walking stick out.

This last few days I have just felt too queer (do Americans use that word in this context?) to even sit up even for a few mins on the comp. There have been times this last few days that I have had to get up, get dressed and leave the house and those short trips have left me so shattered that It has just been a case of getting back home asap and zonking out once more.

I forced myself to got out Wednesday night to my sign language class but quite honestly didn't manage to take anything in of what was going on and had to walk out of the class halfway through to go sit in the canteen and wait for it to finish...
  3. New Year Resolutions.

    12/29/08 07:17:48 | 10 Comments

For what it's worth here are my New Year Resolutions for 2009. I wonder just how many I will stick to.

    1) Instead of getting straight out of bed and on to the computer to have my first cup of tea in the mornings I am going to turn the news on the TV and sit in front of that instead. That way I will actually get up and do something as soon as I have had my tea instead of ending up for a couple of hours still playing on the web. I will then not get on the comp until I have at least had my shower and made myself presentable for the day.

    2) I will start eating at proper times and regular intervals instead of totally forgetting to eat until I find myself feeling dizzy. This is one of my main failings and not at all healthy. I sometimes forget to eat until about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. I might have to start setting an alarm to go off when it's time to eat.

    3) I must try to stop being so lazy. I need to get out and about more instead of having to be...
  4. Screening Tests

    11/14/08 11:18:17 | 2 Comments

One certainly can't fault our Health Service for keeping up to date with screening tests.

The moment I reached 50, or in my case it was just before my 50th birthday I received my first invitation for a mammogram which I now have every 3 years. Now that I am 60 I received a letter a couple of days ago inviting me to take part in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. I honestly didn't know this screening had started.

My first thought was "Oh bugger, not yet another screening I have to go for". But it seems that one doesn't have to "GO" for anything. The screening kit is sent to one's home for them to do the test themselves and then send it back.

Seemingly this test has up until now only been for the 60 to 70 year olds and they are now extending it up to and including the 75s. I can't understand why I haven't known about this test because I do have a Sister that is now 72 and she has never mentioned this to me....
  5. This Will Teach Me to be Greedy

    10/28/08 07:54:42 | 0 Comments

imageIt proves one is getting old when one can't eat the things we used to without suffering badly.

A couple of years ago I had a problem with my oesophagus. It seems that the flap that stops the acid clawing it's way back up from ones stomach stayed open for me. This caused my oesophagus to get badly burned.

It took many weeks to clear up and during that time I was in agony. So much so that sometimes it felt as if I was having a heart attack.

For weeks I could only sleep sitting up because the pain was worse when lying down.

I had asked the Doctor if certain foods would aggravate it and was told "No" I could eat what I wanted as nothing I ate would make it better or worse.

Yea right. Once it initially cleared up I kept a diary of all I ate and of the times the pains returned, which they did on and...
  6. Sorting Myself Out

    10/28/08 07:48:14 | 0 Comments

I am gradually sorting myself out.

I am now being far more aware of what I am eating. I have twigged on that actally when I am at home I do eat properly albeit very small portions. I have plenty of fruit and salad. No veg as I just don't cook but the fruit and salad I eat more than makes up for any lack of veggies and I do eat plenty of protein in the way, mostly of dairy produce and fish.

It's when I am staying with my Daughter that I just don't eat correctly. This isn't my Daughters fault because she does dish up well cooked and thoughtful meals. It's just that I don't particularly like the type of food they eat. And I am at my Daughters a lot.

When visiting my Niece I also don't eat much because she cooks with absolutely no salt and also she just never cooks her veg as much as I like them. To me her veg are almost raw and the amount of red meat she dishes up on a weekly basis is indecent, lol, so once again I just pick at the...
  7. I Stink

    10/28/08 06:46:15 | 0 Comments

imageWell, it's true. I do stink. I stink simply because I smoke. I not only stink, I am anti-social, and I am slowly killing myself.

I went through the agony of quitting many years ago and managed to stay quit for 8 years. Then 15 years ago I lit up one cigarette and low and behold within a fortnight I was back on 20 a day.

am not proud of that, in fact I could knock myself sideways several times for being so bloody stupid. But what's done is done. I can't go back so I must go forward.

I have now got to the point where I see myself strapped to an oxygen cylinder because of emphysema or having an early heart attack or worse still the dreaded big C.

It simple. I just have to quit now. No arsing about this time. I have to Kick the Habit.

I now have 94 days before I officially retire and I think I should use this time to...
  8. Dinner for One

    10/28/08 03:54:49 | 0 Comments

imageI think the hardest thing to do for someone of any age is to eat properly when living on ones own. I do think it's harder though when one is older, for the simple reason that one loses ones appetite anyway.

Shopping and cooking for one is a chore and so it's usually, for the single person, either takeaways or sandwiches. Unless of course one is one of these strangest of people that actually enjoys cooking.

I am not. I used to be when I had a family to cook for and food was cheaper so one didn't have to think about what went in the shopping trolley. But now, cooking an actual dinner just for me to take a few minutes to eat is a pain in the rear.

It doesn't help that for a start I don't like meat and in the second place I have always much preferred sandwiches to a cooked dinner anyway. On top of that, I have the appetite of a...
